Ottawa Public Health admits to 'lying' in tongue-in-cheek tweet on 'alert fatigue'

 

A string of a dozen tweets lured readers to pay attention to a message that even the health unit admits is getting tiresome as residents succumb to “alert fatigue.”

Ottawa Public Health addressed Thursday’s woeful COVID-19 numbers — 151 new confirmed cases reported Thursday, with key indicators worsening — in yet another series of attention-catching tweets.

Opening with the audacious all-caps statement that “SOME OF OUR TWEETS HAVE BEEN LIES,” OPH’s string of a dozen tweets lured readers to pay attention to a message that even the health unit admits is getting tiresome, as residents succumb to “alert fatigue.”

And, like a manipulative parent getting a child to eat her vegetables with promises of dessert, OPH sprinkled its serious message with hints about its lies — all 173 of them! — and defending the lies as not that big or that hurtful, and each one absolutely necessary.

“And even though we do feel bad about the lies, we feel incredible about the vaccines,” the message continued. “They are a source of hope. A literal dose of goodness into our arms.”
