Half of population in Mississauga, Brampton now comprised of immigrants

New data released today by Statistics Canada shows that immigrants have become the dominant population of both Mississauga and Brampton.

In its report based on 2021 surveys by the government-based data gathering agency, it shows that 53.2 per cent of Mississauga’s population indicates birth as being outside of the country. For Brampton, that number is 52.9 per cent.

The numbers are indicative to what has been happening around Southern Ontario, according to the report. It shows that 46.6 per of Toronto’s population is made up of immigrants while Markham and Richmond Hill have the highest numbers at 58.6 per cent and 58.2 per cent respectively.

It’s important to note that the survey is not based on ethnicity and that the children of many immigrants were born in Canada.

The collected data also shows while the majority of immigrants settle in large urban areas across the country, more are settling outside of these areas bases on such factors as housing costs.
